Fostering Creativity: Transforming Lives Through Art Therapy by The Ennis Center for Children, Inc.
The Ennis Center for Children is thrilled to share the progress of our “Fostering Creativity” program, funded in part by the generous support of Impact100 Oakland County. Over the past year, this initiative has provided a therapeutic space for foster youth to heal, connect, and grow through the creative arts. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve accomplished and how these transformative experiences are shaping lives.
Program Highlights
Creative Arts Offerings:
Since June 2024, we have delivered an exciting array of eight-week art therapy series to nine foster youth, each offering a unique therapeutic experience:
- Theater for Life! (May–June)
- Equine Therapy Field Trips (June–July)
- Lego Building & Stop-Motion Movie Making (July–August)
- Music Mashup Therapy (September–October)
- Comics as Visual Narrative (November–January)
These weekly sessions are free for participants, including transportation, meals, and access to experienced creative arts therapists. Each activity fosters expression, learning, and meaningful peer connections in a safe, supportive environment.
Impact on Youth Participants
One of our most touching success stories involves a six-year-old boy who recently joined the program. Having endured significant trauma, he initially entered the sessions withdrawn and shy. Over time, this young participant has blossomed—greeting others with joy, engaging eagerly in activities, and expressing himself confidently.
His foster dads have observed a noticeable improvement in his behavior, citing reduced outbursts and increased calmness. When asked about his favorite part of the program, his heartfelt responses included:
“I get to see my friends!”
“We play fun games and eat pizza!”
These moments underscore the profound healing power of creative engagement.
Unexpected Challenges and Outreach Efforts
While we celebrate these successes, the program has faced hurdles, particularly in attracting new foster families from outside our organization. Staffing limitations at our Pontiac site have required us to look outward for new participants. To address this, we’ve distributed brochures and personally contacted other child welfare agencies, aiming to broaden the program’s reach and help more children in need.
Looking Ahead: Sustainability and Growth
To ensure the longevity of Fostering Creativity, we continue to seek additional funding and community partnerships. A recent grant from the Oakland Together Out of School Time Learning initiative will support administrative costs, supplementing the Impact100 funding.
Our ultimate goal remains the same: to provide a consistent, impactful program that helps foster youth heal, express themselves, and build brighter futures.
Why This Matters
For many participants, Fostering Creativity is their only access to therapeutic services. By equipping these young individuals with tools to process emotions and foster relationships, we’re not just helping children—we’re helping entire families thrive.
