Bars of Hope: Empowering Survivors Through Meaningful Work and Lasting Opportunity
At Hope Against Trafficking, healing extends beyond providing safe housing—it includes equipping survivors with the skills, confidence, and opportunities they need to build independent futures. Thanks to the generous support of Impact100 Oakland County, our Bars of Hope social enterprise continues to create pathways to employment, leadership, and long-term success.
As we reach the halfway point of 2026, we’re excited to share the incredible progress made through this innovative program.
Investing in Survivors’ Futures
The Impact100 Oakland County grant has allowed Hope Against Trafficking to strengthen every aspect of the Bars of Hope social enterprise.
Grant funding has supported the purchase of raw materials and supplies for soap production, expanded product development, provided paid vocational training for participating survivors, and compensated experienced trainers who teach manufacturing, marketing, and business operations.
These investments are doing more than increasing production—they’re creating meaningful workforce development opportunities that prepare survivors for life beyond our residential program.
More Than a Job—A Pathway to Independence
Every product created through Bars of Hope represents more than handcrafted quality—it represents hope, healing, and new beginnings.
Participants receive paid vocational training while learning valuable workplace skills such as manufacturing, inventory management, customer service, marketing, and entrepreneurship. These experiences help survivors build confidence while preparing for competitive employment.
This year, the program celebrated an exciting milestone when one resident successfully transitioned from the social enterprise into full-time employment in the retail industry. Another participant stepped into a leadership role by becoming a peer trainer, mentoring new residents as they begin their own vocational journey.
These successes demonstrate that Bars of Hope is doing exactly what it was designed to do: help survivors build sustainable futures.
Growing Our Reach
Community support has played a tremendous role in the program’s continued growth.
Throughout the first half of 2026, Hope Against Trafficking expanded its social media presence through consistent storytelling, educational content, and promotion of survivor-made products across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
The increased visibility has helped introduce more people to our mission while driving significant growth in product sales.
The results speak for themselves:
- Social enterprise sales increased 197% compared to the first six months of 2025.
- Revenue grew from $2,140 during the first half of 2025 to $6,360 during the same period in 2026.
- Additional survivors joined the vocational training program, expanding both participation and impact.
Every purchase made through Bars of Hope directly supports survivors as they gain job skills, earn income, and prepare for independent living.
Building Leadership from Within
One of the most rewarding outcomes of the program has been watching survivors become leaders.
During this reporting period, one participant became a peer trainer, helping mentor and teach new residents entering the social enterprise. This accomplishment reflects tremendous personal growth while strengthening the sustainability of the program itself.
Empowering survivors to teach and encourage one another creates a supportive environment where participants can see firsthand that recovery, confidence, and career success are possible.
Challenges That Reflect Our Mission
Like every recovery-focused program, Bars of Hope balances business operations with individualized care.
Residents participate in counseling, medical appointments, court proceedings, educational programming, and other recovery services. These important commitments sometimes require flexibility in production schedules and marketing timelines.
While this can create operational challenges, our priority remains clear: every decision is guided by a trauma-informed approach that places each survivor’s healing first.
Looking Toward a Sustainable Future
The remarkable growth of Bars of Hope is helping create a more sustainable future for the program.
Revenue generated through product sales is gradually reducing reliance on grant funding while creating additional paid vocational opportunities for survivors.
To further strengthen this progress, Hope Against Trafficking recently submitted a grant request to Vibe Credit Union to expand educational programming. If awarded, the funding will provide instruction in financial literacy, purchasing, inventory management, product costing, marketing, and other business skills that prepare participants for long-term employment and entrepreneurship.
Additionally, the organization has hired a dedicated marketing manager to better track campaign performance, measure community engagement, and connect marketing efforts directly to product sales.

The grant has expanded vocational training opportunities, increased production capacity, strengthened marketing efforts, and created leadership opportunities for survivors. Most importantly, it has helped participants gain confidence, develop transferable skills, and move toward financial independence and long-term stability.
