Breaking Barriers: How Oakland Literacy Council’s GED Program is Transforming Lives
At the Oakland Literacy Council (OLC), we believe that education is the foundation for a brighter future. Through our “Get Your GED with OLC!” program that Impact100 Oakland County funded, we’re empowering individuals to achieve their educational goals and change their life trajectories. This initiative has already begun making a profound impact.
Progress and Achievements
In 2024, we hit the ground running. With a dedicated GED Coordinator onboard, we streamlined case management and revamped our curriculum to align with GED requirements. From math and reading comprehension to visual literacy, we ensured every resource prepares students for success.
Tutor training has been at the heart of our progress. Over 24 tutors have been equipped with the tools and knowledge to guide students through their GED journey. Meanwhile, recruitment efforts have brought in 37 eager learners, 27 of whom are actively working toward their GED, many from low-income communities.
Success Stories That Inspire
One of our proudest moments is the success of Kelly, our first GED graduate. After years of struggling to overcome math challenges, Kelly found support through our tutors. With their help, she passed all four subject tests. But her journey didn’t stop there—Kelly is now set to begin a paralegal studies program, paving the way for a brighter future for her family.
Overcoming Challenges
While the program has seen remarkable success, challenges remain. The growing demand for GED tutoring has highlighted the need for more volunteer tutors, especially in the Pontiac area. To meet this challenge, we’re actively recruiting and offering comprehensive support to ensure our volunteers thrive.
Building for the Future
Our sustainability efforts are yielding results. Thanks to federal WIOA funding and a grant from the Luly Wilson Trust, we’re ensuring the program remains strong. We’re also pursuing additional funding to expand our reach and impact further.
Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead
We’ve shared our story across social media and revamped our website to showcase this new program. Looking ahead, we’re excited to honor our GED graduates in a summer ceremony that will celebrate their hard work and determination.
The “Get Your GED with OLC!” program is more than an educational initiative—it’s a movement to uplift individuals and their families. Together, we’re proving that with the right support, no goal is out of reach. Thank you to Impact100 Oakland County for making this possible!
