Growing Good Together: How Community Partnerships Are Expanding Hope in Oakland County
At Open Door Outreach Center (ODOC), we believe that food is more than nourishment—it’s a way to build healthier communities, stronger relationships, and brighter futures. Thanks to the generous support of Impact100 Oakland County, our Growing Good Together initiative is already making a meaningful difference for hundreds of local residents.
As we reach the midpoint of our project, we’re excited to share the progress we’ve made and the lives we’ve begun to impact.
Building a Strong Foundation
When we received the Impact100 grant, our first priority was creating a solid foundation for long-term success. That meant carefully planning every aspect of the project—from garden infrastructure and irrigation to expanding our Senior Supper Club.
One of our earliest decisions was to bring on an experienced project manager to oversee implementation. We welcomed back Jackie Redick, who previously served as Open Door’s Pantry Manager. Her extensive knowledge of client services, pantry operations, and logistics made her the ideal choice to lead this important initiative.
To maximize the grant’s impact, Open Door also committed significant organizational resources alongside the Impact100 funding, ensuring the project could be implemented effectively and sustainably.
Expanding the Senior Supper Club
One of the most exciting outcomes of the project has been the rapid growth of our Senior Supper Club.
Our original goal was to provide two community suppers each month, serving approximately 160 meals. However, as food costs have increased and more families and seniors have sought assistance, the need has grown beyond our initial projections.
Today, the program serves up to 180 people across three locations, with Open Door covering costs beyond the original grant allocation.
Between February and June alone, the Senior Supper Club served 632 meals, providing nutritious food while creating opportunities for fellowship and reducing social isolation among seniors and families.
In addition to financial support, we’ve also developed valuable partnerships with local donors who have helped stretch every dollar further through food donations and discounts.
Investing in Sustainable Food Production
Growing healthy food requires reliable infrastructure, and one of our major milestones this spring was completing the installation of our garden irrigation system.
Working closely with the Waterford Township Department of Public Works, we installed a dedicated water meter specifically for the garden. This innovative approach allows irrigation water to go directly to our plants without incurring unnecessary sewer charges, reducing operating costs while supporting environmental sustainability.
The irrigation system was successfully completed in April and is already helping ensure a productive growing season.
Education Alongside Nutrition
Providing healthy meals is only part of our mission.
We also recognize that healthy eating habits develop over time. Encouraging better nutrition can be challenging in a world where inexpensive, highly processed foods are readily available.
Through the Growing Good Together initiative, we continue to educate participants about healthier food choices while offering nutritious meals and fresh produce. These conversations are planting seeds for healthier lifestyles that can benefit families for years to come.
Measuring Early Success
Although the project is still in its early stages, the results have been incredibly encouraging.
So far, we’ve:
- Hired and implemented a dedicated project manager
- Successfully launched and expanded the Senior Supper Club
- Completed Phase One of our garden project with a new irrigation system
- Served an additional 632 people throughout Oakland County
- Welcomed 37 new monthly clients into Open Door’s ongoing programs
These numbers represent more than statistics—they represent neighbors receiving support, families finding community, and individuals gaining access to healthy food they may not otherwise have had.
Looking Ahead
Open Door Outreach Center remains on schedule with every major milestone outlined in our grant agreement.
While we have not yet secured additional funding for the project, we are actively pursuing new opportunities, including support through the Meijer Simply Give program and continued partnerships with generous local businesses that provide food discounts.
As our garden continues to grow and our programs expand, we look forward to sharing more stories, testimonials, and milestones throughout the remainder of the year.
